This gorgeous Ridgeway Stoke on Trent Royal Semi Porcelain platter in the Balmoral pattern is a wonderful large size, just right for your giant family Holiday turkey, ham, or roast! It has lovely flowers with pink and blue petals, and brown leaves.
This vintage platter measures about 18 inches by about 13 inches, and is about 1 ¾ inches deep. The serving plate has the Ridgways Stoke-on-Trent Royal Semi-Porcelain mark in brown lettering, and Rd. No. 72235. It also has some impressed numbers, maybe number 1 over number 88 (?) and number 10, and another impressed mark (see photo). Also, there is a red mark, maybe “P3” and “1531”?
I was not able to verify the age of this platter. One reference that I found for the Balmoral by Ridgeway pattern dated it to 1887, and I would guess that this big serving plate could date back to the 1890’s, but I don’t know for sure?
The serving dish is in very nice vintage used condition, with very minor age wear and tear. There are a few tiny insignificant flecks on the edge (see one in close-up photo). There is some age crazing here and there on both sides. There are normal manufacturing pinpoint size glaze pops and air bubbles here and there on both sides. On the front in one corner I see a couple of very light yellow stain lines that I do not think (?) are hairlines (they don’t go through to the back), but please look at the photo to be aware of these. The gold-painted decorative line that goes around the top edge of the platter has a little bit of age wear. There are a few minor scratches from use on the platter.
This is a large and heavy platter that weighs over 5 lbs. before packing. It would be a fabulous addition to your dinner table, or a great gift for someone special.
